Abstract

This paper is a review on the treatment of volatile organic compounds using absorbents. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are carbon-based compounds with a boiling point ranging from 50°C to 250°C. VOCs have been considered as contributors of photochemical smog and global warming as well as hazards to human health. VOCs can be removed by a variety of methods, including those that are destructive (incineration, catalytic oxidation, and biodegradation) and non-destructive (adsorption, absorption, and condensation). The removal performance of VOCs in the gas phase is influenced by gas-liquid mass transfer and/or the microbial activity depending on VOC properties such as solubility, diffusivity, bioavailability, and toxicity. Since the usual processes for VOCs removal involve water as a VOC absorbent, it is necessary to improve the removal efficiency of hydrophobic VOCs. In addition, VOC removal processes do not appear to show consistently satisfactory performance due to transient high-strength VOC loading in practical fields. To increase the gas-liquid mass transfer of hydrophobic VOCs and to prevent the functional deterioration due to transient high loading, the use of nonaqueous phase VOC absorbents is a promising strategy. This review offers a critical overview of the types, properties, and the applications of the VOC absorbents, including liquid organic solvents, ionic liquids, and solid polymers. This paper also details the advantages by employing the VOC absorbents for the removal of hydrophobic VOCs in the integrated process, absorption and biodegradation coupling process. The challenges of and future perspectives on the development of efficient VOC removal processes using VOC absorbents are briefly discussed.

VOCs는 대기 중에서 광분해(photolysis) 되거나, OH radicals, NO3 radicals, O3과 같은 산화물질과 반응한다 (Atkinson and Arey, 2003; Shen et al, 2013).

(Delhoménie and Heitz, 2005; Muñoz et al., 2007; Padhi and Gokhale, 2014; Shin and Jeon, 2015; Woo and Park, 2017). (Ozturk and Yilmaz, 2006; Blach et al., 2008).

(Muzenda, 2013; Zhang et al., 2017).

(Muñoz et al., 2012; Lebrero et al., 2016; Volckaert et al., 2016).

    log Kow= log P =

    log K o w = log P = log ( [ V O C c o n c e n t r a t i o n ] o c t a n o l [ V O C c o n c e n t r a t i o n ] w a t e r )

    H = [ V O C c o n c e n t r a t i o n ] g a s [ V O C c o n c e n t r a t i o n ] l i q u i d

(Table 5, Hernndez et al., 2010).

(Toft et al., 2006; Quijano et al., 2010b).

(Han and Armstrong, 2007; Ghandi, 2014; Salar-García et al., 2017).

이온성 액체 VOCs 흡수제에 가장 많이 사 용되고 있는 양이온은 alkylammonium, dialkylimidazolium, phosphonium, N-alkylpyridinium, N,N-alkylpyrrolidinium 및 N,N-alkylpyperidinium 등이다(Table 4 & Fig. 2, Han and Armstrong, 2007; Vishwakarma, 2014).

(Brennecke and Maginn, 2001; Quijano et al., 2010a).

(Daugulis and Boudreau, 2003; Morrish and Daugulis, 2008; Muñoz et al., 2012).

(Daugulis et al., 2011; Kraakman et al., 2011).

(Quijano et al., 2009a, Fig. 5c).

(Muñoz et al., 2007; Quijano et al., 2009a).

(Fazaelipoor and Shojaosadati, 2002; Arriaga et al., 2006; Lebrero et al., 2016).

(Arriaga et al., 2006; Muñoz et al., 2006; Hernández et al., 2010).

(Hernández et al., 2012: Muñoz et al., 2013).

Silicone oil을 제외한 액상 유기성 VOCs 흡수 제로 가장 많이 활용된 것이 n-hexadecane이다(Niesen et al., 2005; Boudreau and Daugulis, 2006; Niesen et al., 2006).

또한, silicone rubber pellet을 첨가한 STR에서 BTEX 제거효율은 94% 이상 이었다(Littlejohns and Daugulis, 2008). (Littlejohns and Daugulis, 2008).

(Poleo and Daugulis, 2013).
